Another Rainy Day in Juneau

It rained until about 4:00 p.m. today so that put a ‘damper’ on our sightseeing. We did some more shopping and went to Walmart to get some prints made of pictures we’ve taken this trip. While I was waiting for Fran, I got talking to a man who is kayaking from Skagway, Alaska to Bellingham, Washington all by himself! It has taken him one week to travel from Skagway to Juneau, zig zagging along the coast. Fran thinks he’s crazy but he looked pretty normal to me.

After lunch we went to the Macauley Salmon Hatchery. This is a big operation where they raise salmon and release them into the ocean as fry. After 2 to 5 years, when they return to the hatchery, the eggs are harvested from the females and the mature fish are sent for processing into food. It was quite something to see all these fish struggling to get up the fish ladders and into the processing areas. Especially when you know their ultimate fate is not pretty.

Inside the Hatchery they have several salt-water tanks where all sorts of fish and other sea life are on display.

There is also a stuffed bear – I guess he belongs there as a consumer of salmon.

We returned the rental car late in the afternoon and were driven back to the RV park by one of the staff who was getting off work (nice!). Tomorrow we take the ferry from Juneau to Wrangell. It’s a long ride. We leave at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday and arrive at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday. I booked a cabin for us to sleep in. It’s too bad they won’t allow us to sleep in our own bed in our motorhome.
