Alaska Sea Life Center, Seward

We spent most of the day exploring the exhibits and viewing the sea life at this wonderful facility. It is part educational facility, part tourist attraction and part rescue/rehabilitation facility. It was funded by some of the fines paid by Exxon after the Exxon Valdez oil spill.

They have huge tanks with all kinds of fish and other marine life in them.

In the seabirds area, there is a wide variety of species, but my favourite (as usual) is the puffin. They were close enough for some good pictures today.

We also got a kick out of watching ‘Woody’ the Stellar Sea Lion. He could be viewed from above and below. Earlier in the day, we had some close encounters through the glass.

Later on, he performed numerous tricks and earned his meal of little fishes. He really seemed to enjoy showing off and didn’t need any coaxing at all.

They had a number of films which we also enjoyed watching.

The ‘touch tanks’ were popular with the kids. We felt some of the critters, too.

After lunch at Alaska Nellies Roadhouse (delicious clam chowder for me), we pedaled home to spend the rest of the day with the cairns. I took Gino and Reba for bike runs on the path beside the ocean and I managed to get all three groomed before the rain started.

When the rain let up, we pedaled back downtown for supper at the Apollo Restaurant. I had some really good Moussaka there and Fran enjoyed his pizza. By the time we went home, it was raining really hard. Yuck!
