Exploring Valdez

The weather was beautiful all day today – sunny and warm (about 20C).

We took advantage of the nice day to do all outdoor things. First, was giving the motorhome a good washing. There were lots of bugs to get off the front and it was generally dirty all over from the on and off showers of the previous day’s travel. Fran has been putting a product called Rejex on the front which really helps when it’s time to get the bugs off. It still takes a good scrub with a microfiber cloth and a certain amount of elbow grease, but they do come off.

It was lunch time by the time this big job was done, so we pedaled first to the bakery (which didn’t have anything we wanted) then to Mike’s Palace Ristorante. It was warm enough in the sunshine to eat out on the sidewalk. Nice!

After looking around the small boat harbour directly in front of the restaurant, and admiring the boats and the beautiful view, we got organized for a bigger bike ride.

Here are some pictures of the harbour.

This is the waiting area at the ferry dock (all nice and new).

There is a great bike path that parallels the highway for several miles. We rode it quite a ways. This is the pretty waterfall that we can see from our campsite. It ends just behind the visitor center.

We stopped at the site of the original city of Valdez. There is nothing left of it now. A few buildings were moved to the new city, but most were burned as part of firefighter training. There are some signboards there talking about the history of Valdez. It was founded during the gold rush when prospectors landed here and climbed the Valdez glacier as a route to access the interior of Alaska.

I liked this spot with fireweed, a pond and a glacier in the distance.

The Valdez glacier is out of view, but I got some pictures of the river which flows from it.

We stopped at the Safeway for some groceries, and were pretty tired by the time we got home.

Fran made homemade ‘Farmer’s Market’ soup for supper which was very tasty, as usual.
